Guidance for Respiratory Illnesses

September 4th, 2024

Now that school is back in session, respiratory illnesses have been on the rise around the country and in Dent County. Respiratory illnesses include, but are not limited to:

  • COVID-19
  • Influenza
  • RSV

Respiratory viruses are difficult to prevent because of the way immunity against them wanes over time. This is partly why these viruses tend to have “seasons.” During respiratory illness season, it is important to consider taking some precautions:

  • Stay up-to-date on vaccines.
  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Take steps for cleaner air (bring in fresh outdoor air, use air purifiers, gather outdoors).

If you get sick:

  1. Stay home and away from others until your symptoms are getting better AND you are fever-free without medications for 24 hours.
  2. Take added precautions for the next five days, as many as practical.
    1. Use a high-quality mask.
    1. Use social distancing.
  3. Consider treatment, especially if high risk for complications. Consult with a healthcare provider.

Protect yourself with Vaccines

2024 version COVID-19 and Influenza vaccines are available now at the Dent County Health Center and some area pharmacies and healthcare providers. Everyone over 6 months of age is eligible for 1 additional dose this fall/winter. Individuals who are high risk of complications or hospitalization from these diseases should prioritize vaccination. You may be vaccinated as soon as you’re feeling better after testing positive for COVID-19, but you may chose to wait up to 90 days after infection to take advantage of the natural immunity gained from the infection.

Summary

Respiratory illness season is just beginning, and now is the time to start preparing. DCHC or your healthcare provider can address any questions you may have. Additional information may be found on the CDC’s website at https://www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses/guidance/.
